Everyone benefits when we work on our hearing and listening skills. You can improve your ability to hear in noise. This training helps before you develop hearing loss as well as when you first become aware you are having difficulty hearing in noisy situations.

On average cognitive decline starts between the ages of 20 and 30. Like every organ in our bodies, the brain undergoes changes in how it performs over time. This is an issue whether you are 30 or 50. The fact is that the brain is still plastic even when you are 70 or 80 years old. It can still be optimised.

However many people unwittingly accelerate its deterioration by seeking comfort and a less demanding lifestyle.  The brain wants to be challenged and stimulated.

As we get older, our brain is more susceptible to interference – be that in the form of distractions, irrelevant information or multitasking. This means that you don’t filter information and consequently over process irrelevant information that you can’t ignore. One of the consequences of this interference is poor memory. It is difficult to recall something that was never properly imprinted in the brain in the first place. Like every organ in our bodies, the brain undergoes changes in how it performs over time.

The science of neuroplasticity shows us that a different life experiences can dramatically change the brain.  This is very important to understand especially if you have tinnitus or sound tolerance issues.  Neuroplasticity’s most pertinent insight is that we can take control of such transformation.

Brain training exercises provide us with a tool to build up the muscles of the brain.

Not all brain training exercises are equal. There is a big difference between brain games and brain training. Brain games are something that you do for fun, and is like going out to play. Examples of brain games are things like Sudoku, crossword puzzles, quizzes, and word problems.  Brain training, on the other hand, is more like going to the gym. It’s a system of exercising the brain to improve aspects of cognition like memory, attention, focus, and brain speed.

People tend to challenge and stimulate themselves much less as they age.  The adage “Use it or Lose it” is very relevant when we are talking about hearing.

Those who make sure they continue to engage in physically and mentally stimulating activities will continue to enjoy higher levels of functioning.
